Kosar Dakhilalian

Pomegranate and Feathers

Based on the history of Niagara Region, this play reimagines the Greek tale of Persephone.

Event Description

The play takes place in an old apartment in St. Catharines, where strange things start to happen and lead the characters to uncover pieces of the building’s—and the region’s—history. At its core, it’s about friendship and care in a messy, unpredictable world. Mistakes are made, things get complicated, and we are left to deal with consequences.

About the Artists

Kosar Dakhilalian (co-author, director), Michael Anthony (co-author, co-director), Erica Sherwood (actor), Tyra Hayward (actor), Frankie Turco (actor), Zakk Milne (musician)

Kosar is an emerging theatre artist, director, writer, and educator. She holds a BA in English and an MA in Comparative Literature and Arts. Her recent curiosity lies in the spaces we inhabit, their history, the stories they hold, and the ways we interact within and in relation to those spaces. Kosar’s community excites and inspires her to create, to be, to stay, and to live.

Kosar’s artistic practice is a dynamic, flowing entity that traverses lands, genres, and conceptions. Her artistic philosophy is grounded in the power of collective creation and the belief that an engaging and creative environment starts with recognizing that every member of a creative team is a bodymind that brings abundant lived experiences, knowledge, and creativity to a creative team. Kosar views artistic spaces as potential sites of resistance: free from domination, yet capable of illuminating systems of power and oppression. Driven by a commitment to accessibility and with passion for art activism, Kosar continues to explore how performance can bring transformation, care, and connection.

Kosar is collaborating with Michael Anthony to develop Pomegranate and Feathers and is co-directing Michael's project, Journey of Chance, and is thrilled to be a resident artist with Suitcase in Point again this year and to get to work with this year's amazing team and incredible cohort of artists.

Michael Cicchini (Co-Author and Co-Director) Michael Anthony has been reading tarot cards for five years now and has loved working in the arts for even longer. He creates his art with many different mediums - theatre, visual, musical, collage - with a focus on the storytelling. Michael graduated Brock with a Bachelor of Arts for Dramatic Arts with a Concentration in Production and Design, and that concentration has aides him in bringing his creative visions to life.

Erica Sherwood (Actor) Erica has held a variety of positions in the cinema and theatre industry. After graduating from Humber College, she developed a deep passion for cinematography, sound design, acting, and writing. Her acting credits include several short films, commercials, and six feature films, such as the action drama Fight! (2018) and A Farewell to Youth (2025). Erica has showcased her talents in local theatre, performing in Thorold Community’s Fantasy By Appointment (2017), Pearl Company’s Here’s Johnny (2017), and Firehall Theatre’s Seussical (2018). She also used her college passions in various plays working the board and creating soundscapes. In 2023, she initiated scene study workshops for youth and adults in the Niagara Region through her non-profit production company, Jarico Films for Youth. Recently, she has embraced a newfound passion for stand-up comedy, creating and embodying a character named Nestor—a misunderstood rabbit from Welland.

Tyra Hayward (Actor) Tyra is an actress, freelance educator and visual artist currently based in St. Catharines. She is a graduate from the Dramatic Arts Bachelor program at Brock University with a concentration in performance. When not immersed in the arts, you’ll find her gaming, cosplaying or writing about herself in the third person. She is incredibly excited to be part of this new work and extends her deepest thanks to her amazing directors, co-stars and to Suitcase in Point for fostering the arts.

Frankie Turco (Actor) Frankie is an emerging artist based in the Niagara region. They are a graduate from Brock University’s dramatic arts program with a concentration in performance. While not acting Frankie also performs with “Almost Through April” a three piece alternative band also based in the Niagara region. Frankie hopes that this new work will speak to people in the same way it spoke to them throughout the creative process. Frankie would also like to dedicate this performance to their mother Lisa-Marie Turco who passed away in January of 2023. Lisa-Marie was a light for her community and Frankie hopes that through theatre they may follow in her footsteps.

Zakk Milne (Musician) Zakk Milne is an actor-musician currently based in St Catharines. He recently graduated from Brock University, where he completed a dual concentration in performance and production/design. Some of his creative endeavours of the past year include performing in Half-Blind Owl's Slate Festival, Puppeteering with Carousel Players, and releasing new music with his band Almost Through April. He is thrilled to be involved with In The Soil this year, composing music for Pomegranate & Feathers

Geoff Farnsworth (Painter) Geoff Farnsworth began his art training in Vancouver, B.C. in classes at the Federation of Canadian Artists, Emily Carr, and Capilano College. He then moved to New York City to study at the Art Students League from 1997 to 2002. Here his visual art style began to take shape after training in the realism classes from the live human model before painting in the abstract painting studios. Painting mostly in the class of Bill Scharf, who had been the protégé and studio assistant to Mark Rothko, an Abstract Expressionist influence began to meld into Geoff’s figurative work with a spirit for process, experimentation, and colour exploration.

Geoff has been living and painting in downtown St. Catharines since 2013. He was a part-time instructor in the Graphic Design Program at Niagara College for 11 years. He has taught classes at the Willow Arts Community, served on the Board for the Niagara Artists Centre, and has been a guest artist in classes at the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts, where he has also had his work exhibited. His paintings have been on the covers of albums by the Great Lake Swimmers and other musicians in the area. He continues to collaborate with artists and musicians in the St. Catharines and wider Niagara art scenes.

His paintings have been shown in Niagara, New York City, Washington DC, Minneapolis, Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Norway, Sweden, and Trinidad.

Geoff's painting, "The Meditator," will be a part of the play. The Meditator, 2022-24 is a 60 x 48 inch oil on acrylic painting on panel. It began as a horizontal painting as part of a series of pieces with a water and swimming based theme for a solo show at John Mann Gallery. After I had it back in my studio, I felt compelled to turn it 45 degrees and add a large meditating figure. I wanted to meld the head of the new figure into one of the already present painted swimming figures as a sort of symbolic device toward themes of presence, insight, and imagination. Further elements including a paper boat and cursive graffiti-esque script were then embedded into the composition.
